Tips and Tricks - Punch Out (Wii)
July 10, 2009 by Mike

Daily Nintendo’s Punch-Out!! saga for the Wii continues. As you know, we’re focusing our guides on the title defense, which is arguably one of the more challenging parts of Punch-Out!!. The next opponent is Great Tiger, a practitioner of magic. Brace yourself, this pugilist can be punishing. Just follow our tips, and you’ll retain Little Mac’s crown.
Great Tiger may be a tough foe, but there are ways to tell what his next attack is going to be. The trick is to look the gemstone on Great Tiger’s forehead. You may only have a split second to react, but that’s all you’ll need.
- When the gemstone flashes red, Great Tiger would deliver a straight left (your right side). You know the drill: sidestep then unload on Great Tiger’s mug.
- When the gemstone flashes blue, Great Tiger would throw a nasty uppercut to your left side. As always, you must sidestep and strike back with several punches to your opponent’s face.
- When the gemstone flashes green, Great Tiger would attack with an uppercut towards your right side. Sidestep and punch Great Tiger several times in the face. Remember: the first punch you throw must be Little Mac’s right fist.
- When Great Tiger steps back and his gemstone flashes blue, he will proceed to throw uppercuts, first towards your left, then towards your right. He will keep throwing punches until you manage to sidestep his punch. When you dodge, punch Great Tiger’s face several times.
- Beware of Great Tiger’s new trick: he would fold his arms, disappear, then reappear and scream. A gust of wind would then surround the entire ring with Great Tiger hovering a short distance away from you. Whenever Great Tiger would scream something (sounds like “achaman”), he would send two mirror images of himself towards Little Mac. The mirror images would reach Little Mac simultaneously and throw a punch. You must sidestep each attack. Great Tiger would then spin towards Little Mac like a top with his arms outstretched. Do dodge Great Tiger’s spinning attack, you must duck by pressing down. After you dodge, unload on Great Tiger’s face.
- Another new trick: when Great Tiger’s gemstone flashes white, he would raise both arms and send a two-handed punch your way. To evade, you must duck. After ducking, punch Great Tiger several times in the face.
- Strangely, during the latter part of the match, you’d be limited to throwing just one punch when Great Tiger’s gem flashes green or blue. Just make do with the situation.
There’s a chance that the match would have to be decided by the referee because Great Tiger’s antics cumulatively eat up a lot of time. If you manage to reach the end and stick to the plan, you’ll win over Great Tiger by decision.
