King Hippo's title defense is a bit trickier.

King Hippo can be a complete nightmare in Punch-Out!! for the NES and Wii if you don’t know how to deal with him. Imagine—the guy/thing can block any punch you swing at him, and his damage is out of this world—next to Mike Tyson or Donkey Kong, at least. Fortunately, once you learn his moves, everything is easy, at least until Punch-Out!! Wii’s title defense. Fret not, we teach you King Hippo’s new tricks this week.

Here’s how you beat King Hippo:

  • The fight starts out just like the last one. As King Hippo raises either arm, you’re supposed to smack him in the mouth. Doing this would momentarily stun King Hippo and lower his guard on his belly.
  • Once King Hippo’s arms are off his belly, attack it with punches. Never mind the manhole cover. Your attacks on the belly would eventually remove the cover, leaving King Hippo vulnerable to your punches.
  • Try hitting King Hippo again when he tries to throw a punch. Doing this would give you another chance to remove part of the tape securing the manhole.
  • NEVER EVER try to hit King Hippo when he raises BOTH arms to smash you. Instead, duck. But wait! After his two-armed attack, he immediately raises both arms again for an even lower two-fisted blow. If you duck, you will get hit. Sidestep to avoid the second attack.
  • After sidestepping, King Hippo would tremble and be open to a punch on the mouth. This will cause him to lower his guard on his belly. Unload on the manhole cover. If this is the third time you attack the cover, it will be removed permanently.
  • With the manhole cover gone, King Hippo is practically the same enemy as the one you faced in the minor circuit. Of course, he has his new two-armed, two-hit combo that can knock you down easily.
  • Later on in the match, King Hippo will try to do some minor changeups with his punches, throwing a few straights. Sidestep them. These won’t necessarily leave his mouth open for attack so be patient.

Just continue dodging King Hippo’s punches and look for the appropriate opening. If you do everything right, you’ll eventually knock him out. Like the first match, King Hippo wouldn’t get up after getting knocked down.
