Tips and Tricks - No More Heroes (Wii)

Here's how to kick Destroyman's rear end.
Travis Touchdown is a luchador-loving, part-time assassin/otaku obsessed with anime, porn, and action figures. Incidentally, the anti-hero behind No More Heroes is going up against a cosplayer in his next ranked match. If the last battle against Shinobu gave you a scare, then relax a little—Destroyman won’t be as tough.
Why? Because Destroyman is a bit of an idiot. Like your typical anime character, Destroyman makes it a point to announce the name of his next attack. It makes you wonder why anime characters have so much trouble fighting each other.
Here are the things to keep in mind while fighting Destroyman:
- Here’s how a typical exchange should pan out—maintain your distance while Destroyman yells out the name of his next attack. As Destroyman unleashes the attack, perform a Dark Step or Emergency Evade to dodge then unload on him.
- Here are Destroyman’s attacks that you should look out for:
- Destroy Spark: Destroyman would first yell the name of the attack, extend one of his hands, and release blue sparks. The sparks are short ranged, so it won’t reach you if you’re a bit far. Destroyman is vulnerable during Destroy Spark.
- Destroy Cannon: Destroyman would cup both hands and place them on one of his hips, scream, and fire a ball of energy at you. Make sure you avoid the attack by doing the Emergency Evade move, which is done by pressing Z in conjunction with Left or Right on the directional pad.
- Destroy Beam: Destroyman would raise both arms and fire a thin, long-range beam. Fortunately, you can block this using the beam katana. Just make sure your weapon is charged. If you manage to dodge Destroy Beam using Emergency Evade and end up standing behind the enemy, unload a few attacks on him.
- Destroy POW: Destroyman raises his fist, smashes the ground, and unleashes a shockwave of energy. If you’re anywhere near him during Destroy POW, you take damage. Make sure you back off while he prepares for the attack. Destroyman would be vulnerable for a couple of seconds after the shockwave, so get close and attack during this period.
- When Destroyman’s health is reduced to half, he’d fly up in the air and start shooting Destroy Cannon every so often. While he’s airborne, Destroyman is invulnerable so you need to get him down. Go to each of the three flashing lights around the level and destroy them. Breaking the right one would end Destroyman’s flight.
- Back on the ground, Destroyman would start using Destroy Buster, a really nasty attack. You can’t block it, so you need to dodge via Emergency Evade. After the attack, Destroyman would laugh, leaving him vulnerable to your attacks. Take advantage of the opening.
- You’ll notice that Destroyman would sometimes block your attacks by holding both his arms in front of his face. Press and charge B for a nasty kick to get through his defense and subsequently execute a wrestling move.
