Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has thrown down the gauntlet. The challenge: Reggie believes that the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to outperform Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But before shooter fanboys start screaming heresy, there’s a catch—Reggie is sure that the new Mario game would outsell either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version, but isn’t promising to beat both.

This new Mario platformer screams WIN.

A trailer for the New Super Mario Bros. Wii has just been released, showing off the latest features that the throwback platformer would come with. The upcoming 2D Mario adventure is going to introduce new suits, deviously-designed levels, and other features that would turn this Wii adventure upside down.

For the past decade, most of the winners for game of the year in numerous publications have been awarded to violent games. The Wii’s Super Mario Galaxy bucked that trend in 2007 by garnering numerous GotY awards, reminding us that games don’t have to be violent to be great. In this year’s E3, Nintendo announced Super Mario Galaxy 2, marking the first time that a 3D Mario is coming to a console twice in one generation.
