Nintendo's holiday performance rests on Mario and Zelda.

Nintendo's holiday performance rests on Mario and Zelda.

Despite the Wii and DS’s hefty overall lead in the system wars, this week’s Japanese hardware charts show that the PlayStation 3 and PSP has taken a chunk out of Nintendo’s advantage. According to Kotaku, PSP sales have shot to the top spot, leaving the DSi and Wii in third and fourth place, respectively. The PS3, on the other hand, “declined” to number two.

UK trade wants Nintendo to follow with Wii price drop

September 4, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Nintendo needs to cut the Wii's price.

Nintendo needs to cut the Wii's price.

It was bound to happen. When Sony announced the cheaper PS3 Slim and Microsoft followed with an Xbox 360 price cut, the onus was on Nintendo to follow suit or risk losing their healthy lead. MCV revealed that U.K. trade thinks a Wii price drop this Q4 could be the only way for Nintendo to “regain its edge” over the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Nintendo again leads Japan console wars

July 11, 2009 by Mike · 1 Comment

Again, the DSi leads the handheld race.

Again, the DSi leads the handheld race.

Japanese hardware sales may always have the same winner in this console generation (i.e. Nintendo), but the Kyoto-based company’s means for reaching the top varies from time to time. This week, Nintendo again leads the console wars because of two games: Tomodachi Collection for the DS and Wii Sports Resort for—you guessed it—the Wii.

Nintendo DSi back on top in Japan

June 27, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Nintendo's DSi is still #1 in Japan. Yawn.

Nintendo's DSi is still #1 in Japan. Yawn.

The world is back to normal, at least in Nintendo’s eyes. Kotaku revealed that after a few weeks of declining sales, the Japanese console hardware market has finally gotten out of a funk. You know what that means: Nintendo is still on top, and its products are selling like crazy. Of course, this rise is pretty minor compared to typical year-end numbers, but up is up and you can’t argue with that.

Nintendo DSi leads Japan hardware wars

The DSi is #1 in Japan.

The DSi is #1 in Japan.

The console wars rage on in Japan. In this week’s edition, the results look awfully familiar. As always, the Nintendo DSi remains ahead of the pack. This week, it’s the PSP that’s running closely behind at second, with the Wii a distant third.

Nintendo Wii gets Monster Hunter boost

May 2, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Monster Hunter G has given the Wii a push.

Monster Hunter G has given the Wii a push.

We have bad news and good news. First, the bad: the Nintendo Wii is still outsold by Sony’s PlayStation 3 in Japan. The good news is that the release of Monster Hunter G in Japan helped Wii sales abroad. From the looks of things, the Wii might not reclaim the throne until the release of Wii Sports Resort in June. Of course, that’s not an assurance either.

Wii outsold by PS3 for second month in a row

April 4, 2009 by Mike · 6 Comments

nintendo-wii

Talk about strange. For the second month in a row, the PlayStation 3 has outsold Nintendo’s Wii in Japan. The difference between the two consoles aren’t massive, but Sony’s more expensive console seems to be hanging on—thanks to its currently more attractive lineup. Nintendo’s console, in contrast, has been stuck with GameCube remakes for the Wii.

The DSi also prints money.

The DSi also prints money.

Remember the weird fluke that happened earlier this month? See, the PlayStation 3 outsold all other game consoles/handhelds in Japan. It outsold the Nintendo DSi, DS Lite, PSP, and PS2 because of the PS3’s Yakuza 3. Well, this week, everything is back to normal. The DSi is back on top.
