Say what you want about the glut of music games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band—the genre is white hot and you know it. This is why Activision is striking continuously riding while the wave is at its zenith. One of the top publisher’s latest outings is Band Hero, which is actually a spin-off of Guitar Hero. So what’s the difference between Band Hero and Guitar Hero? Band Hero veers away from the focus on lead guitars, and is replaced by kid-friendly tunes. What do the critics think of the Wii version? It’s time for another numbered Guitar Hero installment. As the number following the title suggests, Guitar Hero 5 is the fifth numbered game in the popular series, but it’s certainly not the only Guitar Hero installment this year. In fact, Guitar Hero 5 is already the third Guitar Hero game released this year, and perhaps a couple more are expected before the year ends. Does Cobain belong in Guitar Hero?

Before the popularity of Guitar Hero, the game, the term “guitar hero” referred to technically-proficient guitar players who can shred the lights out of a performance. It’s no wonder many of the songs in Guitar Hero feature fast solos that could cause cramps on even the hardiest of digits. But when Activision announced that the late Kurt Cobain was going to be digitized for Guitar Hero 5, I couldn’t help but scratch my head.

Metal heads and Guitar Hero fans have one major reason to be pleased about—Guitar Hero: Metallica has arrived. Based on the reviews, Guitar Hero: Metallica delivers great fan service and one of the best Guitar Hero experiences to date. Alas, the Nintendo Wii version doesn’t support any DLC, but it does include a few songs from Death Magnetic. Is Guitar Hero: Metallica worth the $50 tag? The critics speak out.

What do Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler, Julie Walters, and Patrick Stewart have in common? At some point, these celebs were all endorsers of the Nintendo DS and its games. You can now add Beyoncé to that list. According to Entertainment Weekly, Beyoncé was recently taping a TV ad for Rhythm Heaven and showed off her gaming IQ, which consisted mostly of Guitar Hero, Tetris, and BrickBreaker.

The Wii prints money.

News of Nintendo’s market dominance no longer surprises anyone, but they’re still fun to know. The latest tidbit? The NPD Group gave Gamasutra the list of top 20 console and handheld games in the U.S. for December 2008. More than ten games are either for the Wii or DS, and nine were published by Nintendo.

Reviews Surfing – Rock Band 2 (Wii)

Several months ago, the world was treated to Rock Band’s sequel, and it knocked the socks off critics and gamers alike. For some reason, the Nintendo Wii version was delayed, but was fortunately able to make it before Christmas. Better late than never, they always say. From what we’ve seen in the reviews so far, Rock Band 2 is indeed worth the wait.
