Nintendo's holiday performance rests on Mario and Zelda.

Nintendo's holiday performance rests on Mario and Zelda.

Despite the Wii and DS’s hefty overall lead in the system wars, this week’s Japanese hardware charts show that the PlayStation 3 and PSP has taken a chunk out of Nintendo’s advantage. According to Kotaku, PSP sales have shot to the top spot, leaving the DSi and Wii in third and fourth place, respectively. The PS3, on the other hand, “declined” to number two.

Wii back to winning ways and it’s not even Christmas yet

August 8, 2009 by Mike · 1 Comment

Recession? What recession?

Recession? What recession?

After a rather tumultuous Q2 crisis for the Wii where it was outsold by the PS3 in Japan, things seem to be back to “normal” with the waggle-powered console returning to power. The Nintendo console has been selling like there was no tomorrow in Japan, and this can be attributed to several factors, the latest of which are the new black version and Monster Hunter 3.

Nintendo again leads Japan console wars

July 11, 2009 by Mike · 1 Comment

Again, the DSi leads the handheld race.

Again, the DSi leads the handheld race.

Japanese hardware sales may always have the same winner in this console generation (i.e. Nintendo), but the Kyoto-based company’s means for reaching the top varies from time to time. This week, Nintendo again leads the console wars because of two games: Tomodachi Collection for the DS and Wii Sports Resort for—you guessed it—the Wii.

Nintendo DSi back on top in Japan

June 27, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Nintendo's DSi is still #1 in Japan. Yawn.

Nintendo's DSi is still #1 in Japan. Yawn.

The world is back to normal, at least in Nintendo’s eyes. Kotaku revealed that after a few weeks of declining sales, the Japanese console hardware market has finally gotten out of a funk. You know what that means: Nintendo is still on top, and its products are selling like crazy. Of course, this rise is pretty minor compared to typical year-end numbers, but up is up and you can’t argue with that.

June 12, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

So much for the recession.

So much for the recession.

Okay, so the recession does somehow make its mark. Research firm NPD revealed that the U.S. console market suffered a 23% year-on-year decline during May 2009. This didn’t seem to stop Nintendo’s rampage, however. Once again, Nintendo has set a record in Wii sales. Find out more after the jump.

The DSi is #1 in Japan.

The DSi is #1 in Japan.

The console wars rage on in Japan. In this week’s edition, the results look awfully familiar. As always, the Nintendo DSi remains ahead of the pack. This week, it’s the PSP that’s running closely behind at second, with the Wii a distant third.

The magic DS number: 1.04 million.

The magic DS number: 1.04 million.

More money-printing news for Nintendo. Last April, the House That Mario Built sold over a million units of the Nintendo DS in the U.S. That means the DS sold almost 35,000 units per day. According to the NPD Group (via Nintendo Everything), Nintendo sold over 827,000 Nintendo DSi systems and an additional 215,000 Nintendo DS Lite handhelds.

Review Surfing – WarioWare: Snapped! (DSiWare)

April 22, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

The Nintendo DSi was released last April 5 and was met with commercial success, moving a ridiculous 435,000 units in its first week alone. Alas, the number of DSiWare games available stateside is still a bit meager. Fortunately, WarioWare: Snapped! is here to keep us occupied while we wait for the DSiWare library to grow. Is the game worth the 500-point purchase? The critics speak up.
