Star Fox fan project coming to computer platforms
July 18, 2009 by Mike

Let's hope this Star Fox survives long enough for fans to play.
The last time we saw a Star Fox game for consoles was over four years ago on the Nintendo GameCube. This is probably why a handful of fans have decided to take the matter into their own hands and make a new Star Fox game. Alas, since it’s fan made, Star Fox: Shadows of Lylat is coming to “major” computer platforms (i.e. Windows, Linux, Mac).
Star Fox: Shadows of Lylat is built using the FreeSpace Open engine. Since this Star Fox isn’t a mod, you don’t need to own a copy of FreeSpace to run it. See how Shadows of Lylat is shaping up in this trailer:
While the original FreeSpace game came out last 1999, several new modifications are going to be included in Shadows of Lylat. The developers revealed that the game’s high-end pack, which comes with high-res textures and complex models, is aimed at users with powerful machines.
Unlike Nintendo’s Star Fox, which plays like an arcade shooter, Shadow of Lylat is more of a simulator shooter. The developers said they plan to release a demo, but the game will come out “when it is done.” Of course, we’re not sure if this Star Fox project would even survive long enough for a demo.
Since this isn’t an official Nintendo game, it isn’t farfetched to imagine a cease-and-desist letter sent to the developers before their Star Fox game ever gets off the ground.
