Itsa me! Mario!

Itsa me! Mario!

After two years of waiting, Nintendo fans finally get another Super Mario game on the Wii. While New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn’t quite a 3D installment like Super Mario Galaxy, there’s no mistaking it: the new Mario platformer is a marquee game on the Nintendo console, through and through. New Super Mario Bros. Wii has the obsessive coin collecting, devious jumps, and multiplayer cooperative play, the source of all homicidal frenzy. Just what do the critical curmudgeons think of New Super Mario Bros. Wii? Check out the reviews after the jump.

1UP: (100%) “What makes the game great is the way it recaptures the sense of effortless creativity that the best Mario games have always possessed — something sorely lacking in the first NSMB — and the way in which that breezy spirit of invention is presented so accessibly. Here’s the final proof that cutting-edge technology isn’t necessary to create a fresh and interesting game. Here you see greatness is really all about the ideas, the personality, the playability… and NSMB Wii is an exceptional game that anyone can play.”

Eurogamer: (90%) “Who knew that, locked in the time-honoured traditions of Super Mario Bros., one of the greatest co-op games ever was waiting to get out? Well, Shigeru Miyamoto did. In unleashing it, Nintendo hasn’t moved its classic series forward one jot; it hasn’t had to. But it has given it a riotous new lease of life.”

Destructoid: (90%) “Despite being feeling and looking somewhat familiar (which is definitely a positive in this case), New Super Mario Bros. Wii is one of your safest and best bet on the Wii this year.”

GameTrailers: (89%) “If you’ve ever felt wistful about the Mario games of yore, you owe it to yourself to experience New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The multiplayer element, though far from its selling point, adds a welcome, manic element that amounts to icing on the cake. This, simply, 2D Mario at its best, and it’s been a long time coming.”

If you’re a gamer, then you’ve surely played a Mario game before. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is like a further evolution of the popular 2D Mario formula, and it looks like Nintendo has refined (and arguably perfected) the genre even further. We can’t wait to get our hands on New Super Mario Bros. Wii—the multiplayer coop is going to be a killer.
