NPD: Nintendo DS, Wii rule hardware roost for August

The latest news on the hardware front doesn’t surprise anymore. According to the NPD Group, the Nintendo DS and Wii are once again on top of the U.S. hardware heap for the month of August 2008. The market research company revealed that the DS is the leader, selling 518,300 units while the Wii is a close second at 453,000.

Third place is Sony’s PSP at 253,000. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 rolled out 195,400 units, and has finally overtaken the PS3 after consecutive months of trailing Sony’s Blu-ray console. The PS3, on the other hand, sold 185,200.

Despite Nintendo’s domination in hardware, software is a different story. Madden NFL ’09 was the bestselling game of the month, taking up the top three positions in the charts. Three Nintendo-published games are in the top 10, namely Wii Fit, Mario Kart WII, and Wii Play.
