Nintendo pledges to bring more Wii, DS stock for Christmas
October 31, 2008 by Mike
Remember the time when there was no shortage of the Nintendo Wii? Exactly—it never happened. GameStop even predicted that there won’t be enough Wiis again this Christmas. To address this issue, Nintendo promised to bring more Wii and DS stock into the UK this holiday season to cope with “unprecedented” demand.
At least, this is what Nintendo has told MCV.
Nintendo also revealed that console production is at its highest in the Japan-based company’s history. Strangely, GameStop exec Dan DeMatteo believes otherwise, saying that the Wii shortage is intentional.
According to Nintendo, Wii sales are up by 76% and DS sales increased by 27% over the previous year.
A Nintendo spokesperson detailed the company’s plans:
“We have increased our global production of Wii consoles by 600,000 units per month from 1.8 million to 2.4 million since July this year - the highest level of console production in our history. As a result we are planning to ship 26.5 million Wii’s and 30.5 million Nintendo DS globally this financial year, that’s eight million more Wii and five million more Nintendo DS consoles than last year.”
Unfortunately, Nintendo made no mention of any plans to ramp up production for North America and Asia. As you may recall, the North American market is still the largest video game market in the world.
