Gamasutra: Wii games top 2008 bestsellers to date
November 21, 2008 by Mike
The year is still far from over, but Gamasutra has already put together the top five bestselling video games of 2008 so far in the U.S. Interestingly, four of the five games are for the Nintendo Wii. The official figures may have not been released yet, but Gamasutra claims that the maximum possible error in each figure should not affect the rankings at all.
Take note that certain figures are estimated, based on year-to-date unit sales.
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) – 3.5 million, estimated
- Mario Kart (Wii) – 3.4 million
- Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360) – 3.2 million, estimated
- Wii Play (Wii) – 3.0 million
- Wii Fit (Wii) – 2.8 million
Gamasutra also included a list of the top five games of 2007 for comparison. The figures here are from the NPD Group, published last January.
- Halo 3 (Xbox 360) – 4.82 million
- Wii Play (Wii) – 4.12 million
- Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360) – 3.04 million
- Guitar Hero III (PS2) – 2.72 million
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – 2.52 million
Here’s something shocking: Wii Play is part of both lists. Of course, there are still a couple of months left in 2008 so that could still change. However, if Wii Play maintains these figures for the rest of the year, it would be part of the bestsellers list for two consecutive lists. Not bad for a game that garnered mixed reviews.
