September 9, 2008 by Mike
If you’ve been paying attention to the news, then you probably heard that Sony’s PlayStation Portable has been outselling the Nintendo DS in Japan. Yes, it almost sounded like hell has frozen over as well. However, it looks like the natural order of things have returned as the DS went back to #1 last August. According to MCV, the DS Lite is back at the top spot, selling 333,000 units while the PSP slows down with 292,000.
Famitsu speculates that Sony handheld’s dropped to second place because of the upcoming launch of the PSP 3000 this October. The article also revealed that Japan’s games market in August has dropped by 17% compared to the same month in 2007.
MCV also said that the Xbox 360 “did well” during August 2007 and selling 45,000 units, but was outsold by the PlayStation 3, which rolled out 53,000 units. The Nintendo Wii remained untouchable in the console department at 181,000 units.
As for the top-selling game, it was Rhythm Tengoku Gold for the DS that took the top slot, selling 625,500. The PSP’s Phantasy Star Portable was in the second spot with sales of 572,000.
