Nintendo sales increase, profits drop
January 31, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Nintendo is in a rough spot.
Here’s something you don’t see every day (for the past three years, at least): Nintendo’s profits are down. Yes, the same company that prints money with its Wii console and DS handheld is now going through a rough spot. How rough? According to Kotaku, Nintendo’s net profit for a nine-month stretch that ended December 31, 2008 had dropped by 17.9% compared to last year.

Tips and Tricks – Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)

Resident Evil: gratuitous zombie violence
When I get tired of playing the same tough sequence of a game over and over (I’m looking at you, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia), I turn to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles on the Nintendo Wii for a much needed, stress-busting break. Gratuitous zombie violence never gets old in my household, so there’s always room for Resident Evil.

Reviews Surfing – Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii)

The list of role-playing games available for the Nintendo Wii is quite short. This is bizarre, considering that the Wii is selling like hotcakes and that RPGs are one of the more popular video game genres. Hopefully, the arrival of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World would help address this RPG shortage.

Barack Obama plays the Wii

Guess what Obama is playing on his Wii.
The winds of change are indeed blowing, and it’s not purely about politics. True, the White House is now home to the first African-American U.S. president, but Barack Obama’s arrival in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue also marks another watershed moment that other people may take for granted: there’s a Nintendo Wii in the White House, and the commander-in-chief is playing it.

Mario is again #1 in Japan.
News of a Wii game dominating the Japanese charts is nothing new, but this latest tidbit could raise a few eyebrows. According to Media Create (via Kotaku), the top game in Japan is Wii de Asobu: Mario Power Tennis, which is a Wii remake of a Nintendo GameCube title.

Tips and Tricks – Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)
January 23, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment

Here's how to beat Death.
Castlevania, by reputation, is known for its merciless bosses. Several of these special enemies, particularly in the latest Order of Ecclesia for the Nintendo DS, are still a handful even when one is provided with the necessary video or other written guides. Death, the boss we feature this week, is one of those.

Reviews – Moon (DS)

Hectic shooting? Not in Moon.
Moon isn’t your typical first-person shooter. This latest Nintendo DS game places less emphasis on hectic shooting to satisfying that itchy trigger finger and instead focuses on adventure. In a way, Moon is a mix of Metroid Prime and System Shock 2, but it’s not quite scary or perfectly polished. So what exactly is Moon?

Reviews Surfing – Moon (DS)
January 20, 2009 by Mike · Leave a Comment
Like the Nintendo Wii, the DS is a great platform for first-person shooters thanks to its innovative control scheme. Ironically, the Nintendo handheld is also lacking good FPSes. This is why games like Moon, a new shooter from Renegade Kid, are prized additions to the system’s lean FPS library.
